When Zo and I heard that Q-Bert and D-Styles would be onstage together for the first time in ten years (on Nocando’s birthday), we knew we’d have to be in attendance. We grabbed our backpacks, trucker hats, wrist bands, and glowsticks and beelined to San Francisco. I discovered that Zo has a hankering for Michael Bolton when he fell asleep in the car with his Itunes on shuffle.

103 Hariet was packed to the brim and, as D-Styles quipped on Twitter, “every Filipino from National City to Carson” was in the house to see the pioneering turntablists reunited. They were ushered on stage by two mystical alien shamans (dressed similar to Shredder wearing LED light sunglasses) holding chakra gems, who acted as bodyguards through the whole set. Starting with subtle ambient cuts and eventually exploding into a full on orchestra of precise scratching, culminating with their magnum opus “Razor Blade Alcohol Slide,” it seemed as if the Piklz had never parted. You couldn’t help but feel the energy of friendly competition during their “Q&A” session and, when it was all over, they hugged it out like old friends as the crowd exploded into thankful applause.

Mono/poly (above) and Young Montana? (below) both had outstanding opening sets.
